ATS Part 2: More Myths BUSTED

(and Why I'm Doing What I Can With What I Got)

If you haven't already, check out Part 1 where I talk about Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS). Knowing the systems that are in place is essential for those who are looking for jobs. In order to decode them, you have to stay on top of them

It takes a lot of effort, time and money to find out what's working to get hired.

As I learn more on the policy side, I find that to improve the lives of job seekers on a large scale can take time. Unfortunately, when it comes to paying rent or putting food on the table, that is the last thing you want to hear!

So, in the meantime, it's about adapting, learning the landscape, and making the best of the current situation.

So, let's finish up our list of common ATS myths, and then get into some key truths.

ATS Myth #1: They Can't Read PDF Resumes

  • The Reality: Most ATS can read properly formatted PDFs, but using a Word document (.docx) offers better compatibility across various systems.

ATS Myth #2: They Automatically Reject Applications Below a 100% Match Score

  • The Reality: Resumes are typically ranked based on relevance, but are not outright rejected solely based on a low score. Human recruiters often review the top-ranked candidates.

Key Truths About Navigating the ATS:

  • Customization is Critical: Tailoring your resume to match each specific job description significantly increases your chances of getting past the ATS filters. It's essential to dedicate time to customize your resume for each application.

  • ATS Enhance Efficiency, But Don't Replace Recruiters (Yet): While ATS automate some of the initial screening processes, human judgment remains a critical factor in final hiring decisions.

  • Standard Formatting is Essential: Avoid overly creative or complex resume designs. Clear headings and a simple format will help ensure the ATS can accurately process your information.

Cheat Sheet Coming Soon!

I want to provide a helpful resource that can help you navigate this system.

The Bottom Line:

Understanding how ATS work and adapting your job search strategies accordingly is a must in today's competitive market. It's about knowing the system and getting ahead of it.
